"I was so worried I almost called 911," Diana said. Diana, 67, was concerned that her husband's persistent discomfort would strain their marriage. As a retired claims services supervisor, she had made it a priority to enjoy her golden years with him. The couple even moved to Arizona to be closer to their son and grandkids.
However, that all changed a few months ago when her husband's condition worsened. Due to his spine curving sideways instead of being straight, he'd been dealing with sleep problems for decades. Over the years, sleeping on his side caused constant episodes of neck and shoulder stiffness. But one day, it got so bad he couldn't get out of bed.
At first, her husband's issues were manageable with his existing routine. After all, they'd been married for over 30 years. Diana wasn't going to let this get in the way of their relationship.
But as years of poor sleep and persistent stiffness passed by, she noticed behavior changes. He no longer wanted to play with their two pet cockatoos or go on daily walks. Then it became more obvious. He stopped visiting their grandkids. He would randomly snap at her and emotionally distance himself. They even stopped spending time with friends.
"My husband and I started growing apart. I didn't know it was even possible after 30 years of marriage and building a family together!" she admitted.
One day, he told her that he wanted to start sleeping in separate rooms. She almost cried. They'd been sleeping in the same bed for over 30 years.
Her doctor recommended new memory foam mattresses. The typical price range for good mattresses is $700–$1,500, and better ones cost as much as $2,000 or even more. Diana had also tried different pillows — from down pillows to foam pillows, cotton-filled pillows, to several different cervical pillows. She even tried pillows stuffed with pistachio nut shells.
None of it made a noticeable difference. She was feeling completely hopeless… Until one Sunday morning at church changed everything.
